Ethnic Diversity in Silicon Valley
Programming is solving problems and a huge portion of the world population (women and latin women in particular) is not being part of these solutions. This creates worst solutions and more importantly: many problems (the problems of this population) are not being solved.
Would any of these problems be possible if a women or member of a minority in technology were part of these teams?
No, because they would have test the solution on themselves.
How are the patterns related? What influences the pattern?
Lack of confidence
A global study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that girls "lack self-confidence" in their ability to solve math and science problems and thus score worse than they would otherwise, which discourages them from pursuing science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) fields.
What values, assumptions and beliefs shape the system?
No one to identify with
50% of girls does not know anyone working in technology and, of the ones that does know someone, only 18% of these role models are women
Stereotypes about technology
Only 20% of the girls have a positive image about people working in thechnology
Girls consider technology is "boring", "only for geniuses" and that "programmers only interact with computers and not with other people".
